- Hello,
-
- I'm in the process of lending my test server in an effort to see how the Legato
- NetWorker backup works. The problem is the following...
-
- In reading the "Read this first" document that came with the ClientPak III
- software it states that many of the required NLMs rely on CLIB.NLM "which has a
- number of bugs fixed by PATCH-311.NLM, supplied by Novell". The problem here
- is that the University is a member of the Education Account Purchase Program
- for NetWare, which is effect a kind of "site license". While we have gotten
- updates for the OS, i.e. 3.10 to 3.11, we have never received any patches.
-
- In any case I downloaded the 311ptc.zip file from ftp.novell.com. The file
- indicates that it contains the latest release of NetWare v3.11 Operating System
- Patches. But there is no PATCH-311.NLM or anything like CLIB.NLM.
- Furthermore, the Legato readme file goes on to state "Legato is making
- available a version of STREAMS from Novell which has not been officially
- released by Novell"... There may be unfavorable interactions between this
- version of STREAMS and Appletalk and/or the COM server facilities, as well as
- with other facilities. The reason we include this NLM is to solve the "SPX
- flow control problem": which prevents NetWorker or SMS from working properly
- from remote machines. Should you wish to use the standard STREAMS package
- (most recent official bug fix release from Novell)...
-
- O.K... What is the most recent official bug fix release from Novell??? Again,
- their is no STREAMS anything that came with the 311ptc.zip file. Later in the
- readme file from Legato it is written, "Should you decide to use the older
- STREAMS, be certain that you do not load the patch called SPXFIX1.NLM. This
- patch can cause you system to crash very quickly when used with the old STREAMS
- modules.
-
- This is too bad as at least the zip file contained the SPXFIX1.NLM, but I guess
- I'm not supposed to use it.... I think...
-
- (Legato documentation)
- However, when using the new STREAMS only, SPXFIX1.NLM should be loaded, as it
- will prevent small amounts of short-term memory from being lost."
-
- It this the "new Novell STREAMS" or the Legato supplied STREAMS?????
-
- Finally, in the 311PTC.ZIP file is a total of 43 (that's right, 43!) NLMs or
- EXEs that I could potentially load in my 250 user version of NetWare! Which
- ones should I load??
-
- If anyone (hello, Novell, are you listening out there????) can shed any light
- on this I will be extremely thankful.
-
- Oh, please don't ask me to get in contact with our "Designated Novell
- Reseller", we are trying right now to renegotiate our relationship with them
- because they currently won't do anything for us unless we pay them $$$$$$$, no,
- not even patches!
-
- Thanks in advance.
