  17.    Actually, burst mode does nothing to IPX; it works one level higher,
  18. at the NCP level.  It happens that NCP uses IPX as its transport
  19. mechanism, but IPX itself is unaffected.

  21. $  1) what kind of performance increase can I expect?

  23.    It depends on your network.  On our Ethernet, I find 30-50%, depending
  24. on the network card and the speed of the machine in question.  I have not
  25. had a chance to try it on other topologies, and I've heard that if you're
  26. running Arcnet with TRXNET, you won't see a difference.

  28. $  2) what problems have people had using the PBURST.NLM/BNETX?

  30.    BNETX 3.26 is not compatible with Windows, despite the fact that
  31. it ships as part of the DOS/Windows Workstation Kit.  BNETX 3.31
  32. is quite stable, in my experience.

  34.    PBURST 1.00 seems to work fine for me.  PBURST 2.00 requires that
  35. you add an additional SET parameter to your AUTOEXEC.NCF if you're not
  36. using packet signing.  It is reported to clash with some NetWare patches;
  37. don't ask me which ones.

  39. $  3) If I were to decide to use the burst mode, where/what do I need
  40. $     to do to get the NLM?

  42.    It's on Compu$erve, in NOVFILES, under DOSUP6.ZIP.  I don't know if
  43. it's legal to simply grab a copy from there, or if you're required to
  44. buy the Workstation Kit and then grab an upgrade.
