- Here at Western Illinois U, we have about 20 servers all tied together
- with bridges, gateways, etc. In all, there are over 600 PC's, a number
- of Macs, a couple of Suns, and a 3090 class machine using the SNA
- gateway.
-
- It turns out that many servers have over 50 simultaneous connections.
- Most of our servers are 386 DX machines, and most of the time they
- are showing less than 25% load. The problem for users is how many
- bridges they must cross to get to the server they want. A 10BaseT
- workstation crossing 3 bridges to get to a server is really running
- at ArcNet speed (2 mbps). So the bridge planing is a real issue.
- Of course, if you only have one server with 100 stations in one
- big lab, there will be no bridges. There, since 10BaseT will perform
- more slowly under heavy load than Token Ring, the TR solution would
- be better (but, of course, more expensive...).
