  16.     I am posting for a colleague who has a NeXT computer,
  17. but isn't able to post.
  18.  
  19.     He has a NeXT computer that he bought from someone.
  20. He doesn't know a lot about Unix or computers.  The
  21. computer has revision 3.0 of the operating system.

  23.     His problem: he would like to connect to the NYU
  24. computer system via modem, but he doesn't know what
  25. is involved.  He says he tried to connect a Hayes
  26. 1200 baud modem to the serial port, but the system
  27. somehow couldn't find the modem.  The NeXT documentation
  28. is apparently pretty limited on the subject.

  30.     So, two questions:
  31.  
  32. (1) can any standard modem (i.e., PC-compatible)
  33.     be used on a NeXT computer?
  34.  
  35. (2) what hardware and software work needs to be
  36.     done to allow him to actually use the computer?
  37.     He mainly wants to read E-mail from home, but
  38.     I suppose eventually he will want to do the
  39.     same things that most PC users want to do:
  40.     upload & download files, etc.

  42. (By the way, I have been looking through the Sun
  43. documentation, and find that I have no idea how
  44. I would connect and use a modem on my SPARCstation,
  45. either.)
