- I KNOW that there have been versions of Seagate Elite firmware that will not
- work correctly with our system. This is not to say the Seagate had a lot of
- bad firmware only that almost ALL devices that I have worked with so far have
- had bugs in their firmware that had to be fixed before we could support them.
- What you are buying when you buy the device from NCR is that the device has been
- tested in our system and will work.
-
- There is also a fairly large amount of configuration information whose default
- settings are defined by the devices firmware. We expect certain defaults. If
- you get a device that has defaults that someone else wants then in certain times
- you may not get the results expected. For example notification of recovered
- errors. Most DOS environments (I am told) do not want to be notified of recovered
- errors. We feel that knowledge of recovered errors is good because if the
- frequency of recovered errors increases it may point to a device that is going
- bad, is getting marginal power, etc. If you get the firmware off of the shelf
- you don't know how it will be set up.
