- I just called up Apple two days ago (408-996-1010), said I wanted to speak
- with someone in Apple/Pacific Sales, asked this same question, and got the
- following info:
-
- - There are Apple dealers in the US who are authorized to sell KanjiTalk,
- but right now they can sell only the System 6 based version, which
- requires the special Japanese LaserWriter. I didn't ask if any US
- dealer is authorized to sell the Japanese LaserWriter, since I don't
- want to buy another printer
-
- - There will be a new, System 7.1 based KanjiTalk coming out ("confirmed"
- that same evening in the current issue of MacWeek, which claims March
- shipment). The new version is WorldScript-based and will run with
- standard System 7.1. It uses 10 Mb of hard disk space, and if you
- want to load all of the TrueType fonts, you'll need another 60 Mb (!)
- of disk space. At least you won't need a special LaserWriter. The
- MacWeek article reported that Word Perfect & Nisus are readying Kanji
- versions of their products to support the new KanjiTalk7.1.
- Unfortunately,
- the person I spoke with in Apple/Pacific said the plans for distributing
- this version in the US weren't in place yet (maybe because that'll
- require cooperation from Apple/USA).
