- I did not read the original question on "Sys 7.0 bombs on boot. Why?".
- However, I will offer this a general observation, since I recently
- have observed it in seperate instances, and it might be useful for
- others even if it does not adress the original question.
-
- My findings are that a bad LocalTalk connection can result in a hang-up
- at boot time. If the LocalTalk cables are not properly terminated, the
- net will be very prone to disturbances. Normally, the LocalTalk "boxes"
- are self-terminating, but if the cable plug is partially withdrawn from
- the connector, the termination will fail. The confusing part of this is
- that the net may continue to work for some machines, but not for all. It
- seems that the circuitry is slightly more tolerant on some machines than
- on others in this regard. In my case, I had recurring problems at boot
- with a ci, which disappered if I disconnected LocalTalk (at other times,
- the machine would start, but not show any net devices in the Chooser, and
- at yet other times it would work normally). I was almost on the verge of
- ordering a new mother-board, when our technician remembered a similiar
- occurence which had taken him several days to solve, and after looking
- through the net cabling we found the slipping connection. After that the
- problems disappered. The same problem occured again, with an SE/30, just
- a few days ago (however, this time I am not sure if other machines on the
- net were affected, since I found the problem quickly when I came to think
- of a possible LocalTalk problem)
-
- The exact symptoms of this problem is that at start-up, just a second or
- two after the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen is displayed, and just after
- the arrow cursor is shown, the machine will freeze and you will have to
- reboot (this will repeat itself until the LocalTalk connection is fixed
- or disconnected). It is quite similiar to a SCSI bus problem, so if you
- have several SCSI devices installed, this might be your first thought, but
- check your LocalTalk too!
-
- I might also add that it is *possible* that if a slipping connection will
- work/not work, this may depend on how many machines on the net are currently
- active. This might be the reason that the ci would sometimes work, some-
- times not.
