  14. I was having problems launching documents in the Finder.  I tried
  15. rebuilding the desktop a few times and running MacTools DiskFix,
  16. and Disk First Aid but they did not cure the problem.  Eventually,
  17. I booted the computer (][ci, 80 Mb HD) with Sys7 on a floppy.
  18. Then immediately after I rebooted the drive allowing the HD Sys7
  19. to load.  It automatically began rebuilding the desktop.  I was
  20. then able to launch applications via the documents that created
  21. them.

  23. Does anyone know what the difference is between the rebuilding
  24. of the desktop that I did (holding down option-command on
  25. startup) and the automatic rebuild that the ][ci forced on
  26. itself?  Please note that the automatic rebuild only occured
  27. *after* a previous boot with Sys7 on a floppy.

  29. Should I worry that something worse may go wrong again related to
  30. this problem?

  33. More details:
  34. Double-clicking on a document icon (such as MS Word or
  35. Cricket Graph) did not launch the application.  Instead the
  36. system gave me an error message - application not found.

  38. This problem affected documents from every application I tested.
  39. However, I could launch the application itself by clicking on it.
  40. I could also launch the application by clicking on an alias of
  41. that application.
