  12. How does one create a Finderless bootable floppy.

  14. I want to create a system 7.1 startup dis for my vx that will start a program
  15. like SilverLining or SCSI Director.  I cannot fit these programs on a minimum
  16. configured boot disk that has the finder.

  18. I know it is possible since I have just such a disk that start up Norton
  19. Utilities when booting from this disk which runs 6.0.7 with no Finder.

  21. Using the Norton Utilities Disk Editor and viewing the boot blocks the stratup
  22. program is labeled "Norton Utils" and the Finder is labeled Finder as one
  23. would expect.  When clicking on the Finder entry the help dialog indicates
  24. this is where the system returns to if the startup application is quit.  If
  25. no finder one receives a message that states you must restart.

  27. Going into the HEX/ASCII display mode I can see the startup program name
  28. "Norton Utils" in the ASCII display area.  The byte just to the left is 0C
  29. hex which I am guesing is the length of the startup program name, in this
  30. case 12 characters.

  32. Now on to what I tried.  I duplicated the 7.1 Disk Tools Disk first.  Threw
  33. away the finder and copied SCSI Director to the disk.  I shortened the name
  34. of the SCSI Director to SCSI Direct, because it appeared the name could only
  35. be 13 characters long.  This is 12 characters long. I changed the program
  36. name from Finder (The startup program on the Disk Utils DIsk) to SCSI Direct.
  37. I changed the byte preceeding the name from 06 to 0C (12 characters).

  39. Restarted from this disk. The machine seemed to boot fine, but then kicked
  40. the disk out after the initial boot!

  42. Am I on the right track?  Is there any other way to make a Finderless disk?

  44. In case you are wondering why, I want to be able to create hard partions on
  45. my vx hard drive and and the Apple format utility only allow one partiton.
