- I just called Alysis and got the following info:
-
- 1) eDisk is a driver-level compression program, but doesn't replace existing
- drivers- it 'enhances' them.
-
- 2) You can set a desired compression ratio- 2, 3, or 4 to 1. You choose
- a higher ratio if you have e.g. lots of graphics or spreadsheet docs or other
- highly compressible stuff. You choose lower ratios if you don't have as
- much of this highly compressible stuff; otherwise 'inefficiencies' will result.
-
- 3) eDisk must be installed on an empty hard drive or cartridge.
-
- 4) compatible with everything they've tested it with so far except
- DiskLock. They won't be shipping until the end of Feb. because they want
- to see if they can work out the DiskLock inconsistency.
-
- 5) compatibilities include AutoDoubler, SpaceSaver, & other compressing
- & archiving programs (although of course you can expect little or no
- effective compression from these programs- it's just that they'll at
- least give you archiving, unpacking, etc., and they won't break).
-
- 6) They pointed out that they particularly exercised it with disk
- utilities like Norton, and it seems fine.
-
- Incidentally, Stacker expects to be shipping in about 4-6 weeks. Their
- specs are similar to the above (though I'm not sure about #1). So,
- Stacker and eDisk sound functionally quite similar to the PC version
- of Stacker.
