- I think this depends a lot on just how tight the budget is and how
- much data is gonna need to get backed up. I cranked out a spreadsheet
- comparing costs for drive plus media to backup various amounts of data
- from 100M to 2G for flopticals, Syqyest 44's, Syquest 88's, and 128M
- magneto-opticals. For almost all of that range, Syquest 44's are
- clearly the most expensive way to go, since they cost about the same
- as flopticals, but the media cost is about 20% more *per megabyte*.
- Syquest 88's and flopticals are very similar, with the former starting
- out with a *slightly* higher cost but with lower media costs that inch
- the Syquest ahead as the amount of needed storage increases. Note
- that the $100 difference or so in drive cost is misleading, since the
- cheaper floptical includes only about 20M of usable media, while the
- Syquest includes about 80M, so you have to add about three floptical's
- cost to have the same storage as an 88M Syquest. The 128M
- magneto-opticals are the clear bargains for large capacity storage, due
- to their much lower per meg media cost. They become the *cheapest* of
- these four choices somewhere a bit above 800M and rapidly widen their
- lead from there.
-
- I have not, obviously, mentioned speed, where flopticals are quite a
- bit slower than the other three. Pricewise, I think Syquest 88's are
- a *much* better buy than the 44's at the lower end and give flopticals
- a very good run even for very modest needs.
