- : Our department has purchased a Hewlett Packard DAT drive (HP 35480A SCSI) for

- : will (or may) cause the tape to jam in the machine. Has anyone had experience
- : with a DAT drive using the Digital Data Storage (DDS) format? Is it true about
- : the dangers of using something other than a DDS tape? Do I HAVE to use a DDS
- : tape? Is the only advantage of using a DDS tape data compression?
- :
- : The reason for this inquiry is I am having a little diffiuclty finding
- : DDS tapes. We have a lot of machines to backup and would like to use 90
- : foot tapes but can only find two places that even carry DDS tape and only
- : one of those two carry the 90 foot type. Is there a place to mail order
- : in quantity at a good price per tape? (for DDS tapes). Anybody have an
- : idea what the cost per tape should be? I have been to COMP-USA here
- : is San Diego CA and have purchased 90 foot DDS tape (SONY) for $24 per tape.

- I too was told to only use certified tapes in my DAT drive (Archive
- Python) and promptly went down to Whole Earth and purchased some Sony
- 90M tapes. They work just fine, I have used them over a year now and
- have had absolutely NO problems! Your milage may vary of course. What
- you might try (and what I did) was to initially make level 0 dumps onto
- the certified tapes (once a week) and use the regular SONY tapes for the
- daily changes until you are satisfied the regular tapes are going to
- hold up. You should be able to pick up regular audio DAT tapes for about
- $15-$17.

- Good Luck!
