- Just to clarify...
-
- The versions of Macintalk that you find on BBS's are not the same as the
- one that ships with the 'Moose. I have heard rumors of a version of
- Macintalk that is System 7 compatible and freely available (or at least
- non-commercial) but I never found one. Every version I ever found either
- 1) didn't talk 2) crashed immediately 3) caused a crash on a sound after
- speaking or 4) some such combination of the previous three problems.
-
- I finally popped for the $24 to buy Talking Moose (USA mail order price).
-
- If you have use for a (funny-sounding) talking Mac, I strongly recommend
- that you buy Talking Moose and use the included moose-version of Macintalk.
- It comes with a couple of text-to-speech tools, including a moose XCMD.
-
- It has given me no trouble on my LCII with 7.0.1+.
-
- (Well, almost no trouble. It seems that the Moose DA/INIT/... conflicts
- somehow with At Ease, which I use to keep my kids from trashing my HD.
- So I have fallen back to only using the Macintalk part of Talking Moose,
- which is all I really wanted anyway... I notified Baseline Publishing of
- the problem. :-( )
-
- P.S. There are long-standing rumors of an Apple "son-of-Macintalk" with
- greatly improved pronunciation, etc. It has been shown at developer's
- conferences. For some reason, Apple appears to be sitting on this technology.
- In any case, given Apple's new OS pricing strategy, it will probably
- cost a non-trivial amount of money to acquire, if and when they ever choose
- to release it...
-
- Summary: Buy the Moose.
-
- Disclaimers: Just a satified Moose customer, I don't speak for Boeing
