  13. Version 1.5.4 is the last public version and v1.5.8a1 is the latest
  14. registered version (1.5.8a1 is identical to 1.5.7 except for a small and
  15. obscure bug fix). The following excerpt is the version history from
  16. 1.5.5 to 1.5.7, taken from the SpeedyFinder7 documentation, which is
  17. copyright 1992 by Victor Tan.

  19. 1.5.5  (09PNovP92)    Bug fixes: 1) document linking: fixed a minor
  20. bug that caused a memory leak. This would cause handles to be lost in
  21. the Finder* application heap when document linking was required. This
  22. bug causes no functional problems or loss of data but can lead to
  23. increase memory use. 2) auto resolving alias: fixed a bug that caused
  24. menu selection to fail for sixth item of any Finder* menu. This was also
  25. fixed in the 'bf' release. 3) fixed a bug causing AutoDoubler* v2.0 to
  26. crash when the RSavingsIS button was pressed.  4) balloon hot keys:
  27. fixed a bug which caused RShow BalloonsS not to work when hot keys were
  28. active. 5) SF7 Icon in menu bar : fixed a bug which caused a problem
  29. with the RAbout this MacintoshS dialog box. Warning: To fix this problem
  30. rebuild the desktop on your boot disk. No damage has been done but the
  31. SF7 icon is now in your desktop database. 6) no RPut AwayS alert was not
  32. always correct: adjusted it to only suppress Rnon-ejectableS dialog
  33. boxes (which it shouldUve done in the first place). 7) "Get Info" for a
  34. disk wasnUt working: fixed the bug.
  35. 1.5.6  (25PNovP92)    Bug fixes: 1) fixed a bug which caused PC not to
  36. be displayed on colourQD Macs in B&W mode. 2) fixed a bug with "Get
  37. Info" on the Trash. Most of the features added concern the backgrounder.
  38. Features: 1) added icon decoration which should work on non-ColourQD
  39. Macs. 2) the backgrounder has had major improvements. These are i)
  40. dragging icons into the target window places them exactly where you drop
  41. them. It doesn't snap to grid. ii) invisible files are no longer copied.
  42. iii)the presence of queued operations is indicated. iv) background empty
  43. trash can be overridden with 'control'. v) floppy disks are now verified
  44. by the backgrounder. vi) movable resources are handled by the Finder*.
  45. Previous versions didn't handle this condition properly. vii) dragging
  46. files from network volumes to the desktop should now be handled by the
  47. backgrounder. A previous work-around would've been holding down the
  48. 'option' key. viii) duplicating files (Cmd-D) is now handled by the
  49. backgrounder.
  50. 1.5.7  (07-DecP92)    Bug fixes: 1) hopefully for the final time I
  51. have fixed the problem where floppy icon additions are actually drawn on
  52. them on non-colour QuickDraw Macintosh models. I released v1.5.6 with
  53. this problem in it and I apologise for that. I thought I got it right
  54. and now I think I have it. 2) fixed a bug where if you quit the Finder*
  55. it would sometimes not use the backgrounder until a restart. This was
  56. sometimes a random error but I tracked it down - and fixed it. 3) fixed
  57. a long-standing conflict with Aladdin Systems, Inc. MagicMenu*. This
  58. caused conflicts with either RAuto Alias ResolvingS or trying to use
  59. RoptionS before selecting a MagicMenu item. 4) fixed a problem
  60. introduced in v1.5.6 where the backgrounder ignored all invisible files.
  61. It now ignores only Desktop Database files and the AppleShare privileges
  62. file. This problem was causing folders with Rcustom iconsS to not have
  63. their custom icons copied and the subsequent folder hierarchy disrupted.
  64. 5) fixed several problems with the duplicate routine. Sometimes, file
  65. names being generated by the duplicate routine were too large causing
  66. either TAddress errorsU, TBus errorsU or T-37U errors. The duplicate
  67. name generate routine now follows exactly what the Finder* does. There
  68. was also another problem where files selected for duplication in the
  69. TlistU view of the Finder* which were in several different layers of the
  70. hierarchy were all duplicated to the top most layer of the current
  71. folder window. This is a problem which COPYright* v1.0 suffers from.
  72. CopyDoubler* v1.0 however does not suffer from this problem. Features:
  73. 1) an old feature was put back in that I took out with previous
  74. versions. This was where files dragged to the trash were immediately
  75. deleted. This is an EXTREMELY dangerous option and a further warning is
  76. given to you when you check this option. Put back in by request from a
  77. few users. 2) more improvements to the backgrounder. These are i) now
  78. verifies data written to a floppy disk. There is an option for this. ii)
  79. now copies Finder* file comments with files. Note that COPYright* v1.0
  80. and CopyDoubler* v1.0 do not. iii) when copying a RSystemS file to
  81. another location, the boot blocks for the destination are updated with
  82. the correct information from the RSystemS file copied. The Finder*
  83. automagically performs this function for you and neither COPYright* v1.0
  84. nor CopyDoubler* v1.0 do this. iv) now updates the Desktop Database
  85. where possible. It is not possible to update the database on floppy
  86. disks. This is due to a Macintosh File/Resource Manager limitation. 3)
  87. removed the RExtFSS feature of foreground Finder* copying because it was
  88. probably causing more confusion than necessary or being totally ignored
  89. anyway. It was removed to make way for the Rkeep trash emptyS feature.
  90. 4) warns you if the backgrounder cannot be launched for any reason and
  91. reports the associated error number. The Finder* will then perform your
  92. requested operation. The most common cause for this to occur is either
  93. the Control Panel cannot be found or you donUt have enough application
  94. memory left to launch the backgrounder. It will continue searching for
  95. the backgrounder each time but will not report any subsequent errors
  96. until it again successfully launches the backgrounder.

  101. registered user, I *strongly* recommend getting the latest version. The
  102. Backgrounder application is worth it, alone. The recommanded shareware
  103. fee is Aus$20.00 or US$15.
