- In my on going quest to determine which disk compression utility should remain
- on my hard disk (AutoDoubler or SpaceSaver), I decided to switch back to SS
- when SS 1.0.3 was out (as suggested by Leonard Rosenthol). Anyway, I did post
- my findings in a rather nasty (perhaps unnecessarily so). but I thought I should
- post my findings here as well. Excuse me if some of this is old news, and excuse
- me if I focus on my findings of SpaceSaver.
-
- First of all, let me say that I do think 1.0.3 of SpaceSaver is *much* better
- than the first release. However, many of the behaviour quirks are still present.
-
- 1) SS does not work well with CopyDoubler. Should I expect that they would ever
- work together (CopyDoubler being from arch-rival Fifth Generation)? The result was
- that files were uncompressed during the read, and re-compressed when writting
- (copying a folder label "Compress").
-
- 2) "SpaceSaver Info..." from the SpaceSaver menu causes files compressed to SpaceSaver
- to revert back to standard Stuffit Deluxe icons. The original icons can only be
- restored (as far as I can tell) by doing a "Get Info..." from the finder which
- *still* results in the file getting uncompressed.
-
- 3) No way to halt a timely operation. Suppose you move a large unlabeled folder out
- of a folder labeled "compress". You can get SS to skip some files, but you cannot
- get it to stop the uncompress operation. I still do not understand why it is
- uncompressing the files anyway, I did not move them to a folder labeled "uncompress"...
-
- 4) I couldn't not figure out how SpaceSaver works with nested folders. For example
- (I am writting this from memory, but I think I remember the behavior) If you have
- a folder labeled "uncompress" which contains another folder, you cannot get files
- to compress in the nested folder (even if it is labeled "compress"). However, if
- you label the outer folder "compress" and the nested folder "uncompress" then the
- files will not compress. I would have expected that SpaceSaver would search the
- folder hierarchy (starting with the folder containing the file) and stop as soon
- as it finds a label that is relevent.
-
- 5) No way (in idle-time compression) to compress files which have not been USED
- (as opposed to modified) in a given amount of time. It would be great to have
- my infrequently used applications remain compressed, but the ones I do use on a
- day-to-day basis remain uncompressed.
-
-
- I have not experienced any crashes, it does seem to be a
