  12. I am about to buy a laptop/notebook computer and need a little advice. 
  13. Unfortunately, here in Japan, not only is it a little difficult to buy 
  14. IBM compatible machines, since very few people use them, it is also 
  15. difficult to find out what is really available. To make matters worse, I 
  16. have to deal with a single compan, who know less than me about 
  17. laptops/notebooks, and whose range of products that they are able to 
  18. provide is limited. Although I have the equivalent of 4,500 dollars (US) 
  19. to spend, this will only get me a 386 machine with black and white 
  20. display.

  22. So far, within my price range, I have been offered either a 386 SX IBM 
  23. notebook, running at 25 MHz, with optional amounts of RAM and hard disk 
  24. space, or a Compaq laptop with the same specifications and exandable 
  25. options. The compaq is a little more expensive. Is this enough 
  26. information for someone to tell me which I should buy?

  28. I would like to know the following. Of the two makes of computer, which is 
  29. more reliable, which has the better screen, and which is more popular 
  30. amongs users. Do these manufacturers make similar models but with 
  31. different quality screens. Is the laptop much bigger than the notebook 
  32. and is there any difference between laptops and notebooks other than 
  33. name and size only. Also, is it possible to get DX 386 machines or 
  34. machines running at higher clock speeds from these makers and how might 
  35. this improve my computing. What about maths coprocessors? What is 
  36. available there?

  38. Finally, if I had a makers name to suggest to the company, they may be 
  39. able to get it for me so suggestions for better machines would be very 
  40. welcome. Surprisingly, almost all IBM compatibles made in Japan are for 
  41. export so if I buy a computer, it must be re-imported. That is why my 
  42. choice is so limited. The Japanese have only heard of the big names.

  44. I hope this isn't too much to ask and that some kind soul will help me 
  45. out. As I rarely read the newsgroups, please send your answers by EMAIL 
  46. and forgive me if I have asked too many FAQs but I'm a little new to 
  47. this topic.
