- Hi,
-
- I have upgraded my GUS to 1 MB yesterday. The first thing I did to try it out
- was to play (large) MIDI files. With some files, I noticed some clicks in some
- patches. First I thought it was the infamous Gravis UltraClick (tm), so I loaded
- the patches in Patch Manager: No clicks.
-
- Since the clicks only occured with large MIDI files, I loaded approx. 1 MB of
- patches to the card: The clicks only occur on patches that are loaded at approx.
- 950 kB. (PM says that there is +- 60 kB left). If I unload some patches, the
- clicks are gone (so the clicks are not in the patches).
-
- Then I noticed another strange thing: The clicks sound on regular intervals. The
- higher the notes, the shorter the interval: Lowest note about 2 seconds, highest
- notes almost continuously. Also, when I change the volume, the clicks also sound
- louder or softer.
-
- So I tried the DRAM test program, since there could be something wrong with the
- chips. DRAM reported bank 0 ok, banks 1, 2 and 3 not ok. I switched bank 2 and
- 3, but got the chips mixed up and placed the chips at random. DRAM now reported
- banks 0, 1 ok and 2, 3 not ok. I tried out Patch Manager again, but the problem
- was still there.
-
- Then I switched bank 2 and 3 again, now without mixing up the chips. DRAM reported
- that banks 0, 1, 2 were ok and 3 not. But the problem still exists!
-
- The strange thing is that although I switched the chips on banks 2 and 3, the
- problem always occures around 950 kB and the clicks seem to be note and volume
- dependent. The latter might indicate a RAM chip problem, but that is contradicted
- by the first, since switching the chips should shift the problem to another
- region.
-
- Does anybody know what the problem is? Do I have bad RAM chips (the new chips are
- exactly the same as the chips that were already on the card), or do I have a
- defective board (maybe an address line isn't working ok)? And what might be the
- solution?
-
- Thanx!
-
- Jerry
