- The basic parts you are looking for are :
- 1) drive
- 2) case
- 3) power supply
- 4) host adapter
-
- Because you have limited memory I would recommend that you
- get TOS 1.4 to avoid using memory on fixes to TOS 1.0.
- (Sort of scares me to call 1 meg of memory "limited memory". )
-
- I would get a case that can hold at least 2 drives, and can be used
- as a monitor support. The case should also have the 50 pin SCSI
- connector, and cabling. This will allow you to move the drives
- easily to another platform (i.e., TT, MAC, IBM-clone).
-
- I recommend the ICD Linx host adapter, and ASCI cable. This host
- adapter plugs into the SCSI connector and the ASCI cable.
-
- The prices, in US dollars, you can expect to pay for the parts are:
- 1) drive 40meg $200, 85meg $300
- 2&3) case/powersupply $50 -> $120 (depends on cabinet and ps rating)
- 4) host adapter (linx) $100 (should include ASCI cable)
-
- TOS 1.4 $70
-
- I figure you are looking at a retail price of around $400 (US)
- for a 40meg harddrive, and around $500 (US) for an 85meg harddrive.
-
- A good source of HDs with cabinets and power supplies are companies
- that have older SUN equipment with external HDs. They tend to upgrade
- everything, not just the drive mechanisms. I had a 200 meg drive that
- lasted 2 years that I purchased, with case and ps, for $150 (US). I just
- added a host adapter and was sailing along for under $300. If you do
- get a used HD plan to replace the mechanism in a year, and perform lots
- of backups. So ask around, the worst answer you'll get is none available.
-
- I have always created my own HD sub-systems. They are easy to put
- together and ICDs software is the easiest to use, a copy comes with
- every host adapter.
