- I've been having compatability problems with MiNT... My first sign
- of the problems was lack of filename completion in TCshell. The
- machine always locked up. Then I noticed whenever I did a "Find" in
- STeno, it would lock up when it couldn't find anymore strings. I was
- getting phantom lockups all the time. Then it clicked... it was the
- bell! I turned off the bell in the control panel, and that fixed it.
- But I was curious to see what caused it. At first I thought it was
- TCSH, so I closed it in TOSwin and saved TOSwin's configuration.
- Then I began rebooting with different configurations...
-
- These are the things I found out.
-
- The following refer to the bell problem, which I tested after each reboot
- by bringing up an alert box and clicking off the edge (so as to make the
- bell sound) and seeing if it locked up:
-
- 1) TCSH is not the problem
-
- 2) TOSWIN is a problem. Everything works great when I don't have it
- running as an accessory. It's OK when it's running as a program though.
-
- 3) Warp 9 control panel accessory is a problem. Everything works great
- (including TOSwin accessory) when Warp9 cp is gone.
-
- 4) STeno accessory and UIS3 program are problems when Warp9 cp is
- installed. Works fine with Warp9 cp unless either of these is running.
-
- 5) Of course, everything except TOSwin works without MiNT.
-
-
- The filename completion problem is totally separate; when the bell doesn't
- lock the system up, it still doesn't work. It just dings the bell &
- accesses the hard drive.
-
- Man, I've never had this complex of a problem! It'll be a nightmare to
- sort everything out. I'm sure MultiTOS will fix it, because a) I can run
- toswin as a program, b) it will have a new version of MiNT, and c) it will
- replace most of TOS, possibly changing the way the bell rings. I sure
- hope they get it out quick!!!!
-
- Has anyone had similar experiences? Probably the worst problem is
- the lack of filename completion in TCSH; the incompatabilities can be
- worked around. Is there an entry in tcsh.rc that affects how TCSH
- uses filename completion? Filename completion worked fine before I
- reinstalled everything with the MiNT distribution kit...
