  18. I think this is a good idea, and I'd certainly volunteer for such
  19. a  project (I'm native German, and my English... well, look at my
  20. postings, it sort of works... :-). However, it seems to  me  that
  21. we  have  another  example  here how copyright can prevent a good
  22. plan from being done. Copyright  "protection"  of  printed  books
  23. normally  states  that  the book may not be translated to another
  24. language without explicit consent of the publisher.
  25. This means, if we can find a group that is willing  to  translate
  26. the  Profibuch,  we'd  have  to  get into contact with Sybex. I'd
  27. expect that then, the Sybex folks would doubt the professionalism
  28. of  such  a bunch of people as translors. They may finally agree,
  29. but under the obligation that the translated version may  not  be
  30. made available to anyone but them. Then, they'll take the English
  31. version, and if they think it is properly done, there might be  a
  32. chance they actually print it.
  33. Because of all these hassles that would  inevitably  accompany  a
  34. Profibuch  translation  project,  I  restrict  my statement about
  35. volunteering the following way:  I  would  do  it,  but  only  if
  36. someone  else negotiated with Sybex in advance and made sure that
  37. they are going to publish it.
  38. Maybe Julian Reschke can comment on whether there is a chance  to
  39. get things going under such reasonable conditions.

  43. P.S.: Is there anyone from the pro-copyright fraction  who  wants
  44. to  argue  that volunteers translating the Profibuch would do any
  45. harm to Sybex...?
