- Question: Which model? There are 3 (I assume you're not talking
- about the colour editions :-)):
- a) Desk Jet ("Classic")
- b) Desk Jet+
- c) Desk Jet 500
-
- They're all rather similar, but ARE distinct, and have somewhat
- different features. For instance, the set of built-in fonts grows for
- the later printers.

- It could be, but it's not 100% clear.

- This probably indicates that you need to replace the ink cartridge.
- I've never had this particular problem with my DJ, but then I tend to
- replace the ink cartridge, and you may have a nearly dead one.
-
- Not a major problem, depending on how much HP charges for the
- cartridges Down Under.
-
- If some of the ink nozzles have gunked up, that could cause the
- problem. I'd suggest running it through a couple of "priming" cycles;
- there's a button marked "PRIME," which I think makes the printer try
- to run some ink through ALL of the nozzles while sitting off-line.
- That might clear the nozzles. Otherwise, you probably just have to
- get a new cartridge.
-

-
- That's Write supports both internal and "external" fonts; FSM/FONTGDOS
- support the Deskjet too. There's a driver file for ST-Writer on
- atari.archive.umich.edu; I'm not TOO familiar with the support of
- other word processors for the DJ.
-
- Any of the major desktop publishing packages (Pagestream/Calamus)
- support the DJ; they tend to do bitmapped graphics, and thus make
- little use of the internal fonts.
-
- I use TeX to get "the most" out of my Deskjet; unfortunately, there
- are implementations of TeX that run under UNIX, which presumably
- disqualifies it from being a "quality" piece of software, under
- certain classifications. On the other hand, TeX was written by Donald
- Knuth. Enough said :-).
-

-
- The only printers that have "better" support on the ST are the Atari
- laser printers, and there's some question there...
