- But mainframe sales have already peaked (back in 1991, at 8.22 billion),
- and shows no signs of reversing. Also, most mainframe sales are replacements
- for older mainframes. That, plus the fact that technological development
- is advancing on microcomputers workstations, and midrange systems is
- why IBM is in trouble, and why DEC is betting the farm on Alpha and Unix.
- No, mainframes aren't gone yet, but their glory days are over,
- especially now that you can get "mainframe replacements" from companies
- like Pyramid which will compete (technologically) with IBM's ES/9000s, at
- a fraction of the cost.
