  17. In AppleWorks GS, I would just open the original Appleworks file in DB and
  18. WP formats, and AWGS would convert them automatically.  I'm sure it can do
  19. this with spreadsheets as well....

  21. Aha!  In the "Using AppleWorks GS" book by Douglas L. Brown, in Appendix A,
  22. it says that classic Appleworks files can be opened by the analogous AWGS
  23. applicaton.  Basically, in AWGS, at the "opening menu," 
  24.         (1) click on the name of the file to select the file
  25.         (2) click on the open button on the dialog box  (or just simply
  26. doubleclick on the file in step (1).  But there's more:
  27.         "When you open a classic AppleWorks spreadsheet file, the contents
  28. of the SS are displayed in a new AWGS SS window.  The following list is
  29. the formatting retained in the document:
  30.         Cell formatting
  31.         Default cell format
  32.         Column width
  33.         Titles
  34.   THe most important changes are seen in classic AppleWorks formulas.  A
  35. crucial change applies to relative and absolute references in formulas.  In
  36. classic AppleWorks SS, no information is stored with the formula to
  37. indicate if references are relative or absolute.  All references are stored
  38. as relative references."  As a result, when classic AW formulas are
  39. transferred to the new doc, all references must be displayed as relative
  40. references.  This won't have impact on the values displayed on the original
  41. SS, but may have serious consequences if you copy or move formulas from
  42. their original location in the SS.  Carefully check all formulas in the SS
  43. before copying or moving formulas!
  44.         There is more in Appendix B, but restating all that info could take
  45. some time.  Mail me for more help, if needed.
