  13. Hi, computeers.  How many have used the new Tahiti-II optical disk drive from
  14. MaxOptix?  It handles rewritable optical disks, and has two modes: 600MB ISO
  15. and 1GB ZCAV.  We bought one for a VAXstation 4000 model 90, and are having
  16. some trouble configuring it properly.

  18. I connected the Tahiti-II drive to the 2nd SCSI bus (via TURBOchannel card) on
  19. the VS4000-90, and when I turned it on (the >>> comsole prompt) and did a SHOW
  20. CONFIG it didn't sho the Tahiti-II drive at all.  The SCSI cable is less than
  21. 16'.  The devices on it are a Fujitsu 1.0GB disk, and a Fujitsu 1.7GB disk. 
  22. Any idea why it wouldn't show up?

  24. Just in case length was a problem, though, I moved the Tahiti-II drive to the
  25. 1st (main) SCSI bus.  Now a SHOW CONFIG displays the device at the correct SCSI
  26. ID.  Currently on that SCSI bus I have the internal RZ25 (RZ26?), an RRD40, an
  27. external Exabyte 8500, and the Tahiti-II, in that order.  All other devices on
  28. that bus (and the 2nd bus) work fine.  There were no self-test errors reported. 
  29. When I boot VMS the drive shows up as DKA0:, which is fine.  The problem here
  30. is that when I do a MOUNT on it, I get the message "fatal drive error".  The
  31. error counts goes to 1, but never increases, even after subsequent failed
  32. attempts to MOUNT.  I tried MOUNT /FOREIGN, also.

  34. I examined the error log (there's only one entry for this), and it has an error
  35. type of "invalid mode sense data returned", port status of "normal successful
  36. completion", SCSI command of "mode sense", SCSI status of "good".  I've
  37. included the full entry below in case anyone can make any more "sense" out of
  38. it.

  40. I have the internal jumpers onthe Tahiti-II drive set to SCSI ID 0 and report
  41. device type as direct access.  The other setting for that jumper is to report
  42. as optical media, which I don't think VMS handles yet; either way it is set
  43. shouldn't affect operation, just device type reported.  There is one more
  44. jumper, which is to be inserted for MicroVAX II operation.  I've tried it both
  45. ways with the same result.

  47. This drive did work once on a MicroVAX II with a CMD-220 SCSI adapter.  After
  48. some initial configuration problems it worked quite nicely.  I've run out of
  49. ideas of what to try next; so has MaxOptix, btw.  If anyone can shed some light
  50. I'd be grateful.  Thanks.
