- Currently on our VAX 6310 we have 4 RA70 disks which are 280 MB each. One
- of them I treat as a "system disk". I do not have anything on it other than
- VMS (and Multinet). It currently has 200,000+ free blocks.
-
- I have been asked by my boss to investigate increasing our disk storage on
- that system. Most of the solutions I am looking at involve keeping our
- existing controller (KDB 50) and just replacing the RA70's with larger
- disks, like maybe RA72s which are 1 gig each.
-
- I have one question/concern about doing this: it seems to me that I will
- no longer be able to justify setting aside one disk as a "system" disk,
- since the new disks will be much bigger and thus there will be more "wasted"
- space on it. I figured out that even if I moved all of our applications
- (PMDF, Oracle, Word-11) to the "system" disk, the total size of all this
- stuff would only be around 300 megs. So, what do other people do? Do
- you put user directories on the system disk? Is this a problem for any
- reason, i.e. when doing VMS upgrades? How about contention for the device?
-
- I appreciate any insights you can offer.
