- First, I'm e-mailing Tandi my guide on how to ask questions of
- info-vax/comp.os.vms. Second, the most likely reason for the problem described
- is that the machine in question is not actually on the internet (of course,
- there's no way for me to test that hypothesis, since Tandi apparently concluded
- that the host in question *COULDN'T POSSIBLY* have anything to do with his
- problem, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE ERROR MESSAGE SPECIFICALLY POINTED OUT THAT
- THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THAT HOST NAME. Please, *THINK* before you post), but
- that an MX record exists for it, pointing to some other machine as a mail
- exchanger. Here's how it works:
-
- Suppose you've got a machine, HOST.REMOTE, that's not directly connected to the
- internet, but there's another machine, HOST.INTERMEDIATE, that *IS* on the
- INTERnet that can somehow get mail to HOST.REMOTE. Then instead of having an
- address record in the nameservers, HOST.REMOTE will have an MX record there.
- That record tells your host, "If you want to send mail to HOST.REMOTE, send it
- to HOST.INTERMEDIATE, which will then forward the mail for you. Thus you can
- send mail to HOST.REMOTE, even though you can't talk directly with it.

- Disclaimer: Hey, I understand VAXen and VMS. That's what I get paid for. My
- understanding of astronomy is purely at the amateur level (or below). So
- unless what I'm saying is directly related to VAX/VMS, don't hold me or my
- organization responsible for it. If it IS related to VAX/VMS, you can try to
- hold me responsible for it, but my organization had nothing to do with it.
