- First, I want to thank all of the people who responded to my request
- for recommendations for a standalone 9600+bps modem to use as a dialin and
- dialout device for a MV3100/30 here. I received 8 responses and 4 requests for
- my summary. Since the S/N ratio has degraded drastically here over the last
- week, I figured I'll post my summary since this is apparently an issue which
- people have to deal with often, and gives me a chance to up the "S" side (I
- hope).
-
- We have decided on the MultiTech 1432BA modem. This decision
- was mainly driven by a note that I received from Aaron Leonard (U of
- Arizona) which was a pointer to the results of their extensive RFP for modems
- for their systems. They eventually selected the MultiTech modem from a
- collection of dozens, and I'm ordering one from one of the same places that
- they are purchasing from. If you want to FTP the summary of the bids that they
- received and the choices that they made (which I did, and it's even got phone
- numbers and people to contact in it!), FTP to Arizona.edu and get files with
- "modems" in their names from [uofa.rfp]. There are contact names, addresses,
- and phone numbers in there for just about all of the major modem
- manufacturers that I have ever heard of.
-
- The MultiTech 1432BA is a v.32bis modem with a 57.6bps serial port
- speed. It has group III fax capability (which I wasn't looking for) and a
- line speed of 14.4kbit. It also comes in a rackmount card version (the
- 1432BAR) and is made in the USA (according to the reseller). The list price is
- $895 (ouch!) but we were quoted a price of about $520 for one, and quantity can
- bring that down even more.
-
- Summary of modems recommended:
-
- 2 MultiTech 1432BA (leonard@arizona.edu and mikel@anorad.linet.org)
- 2 Telebit QBlazer (DanMZ@Echosphere.Com and lee@hsh.com)
- 1 USR Courier DS (dragon@nscvax.princeton.edu)
- 1 Hayes Optima 96 (wayne@tachyon.lonestar.org)
- 1 Telebit T1600 (johnc@vexcel.com)
- 1 Microcom 14.4 (MORRIS@patrick-pims.af.mil)
-
- and 1 *thumbs down* on Practical Peripherals' 9600 v.42bis
- (carpenter@fwva.saic.com)
-
- We will place the order shortly. If anyone wants to hear about how
- the setup goes, send me e-mail and I'll hang onto it and let you know when
- things are running.

-
- PS: Since this thing has FAX capability, does anyone know how I could take
- advantage of it without resorting to commercial FAX software (big $$$)?
