- New Riders Press (NRP) has a new book out for OS/2 called "Maximizing
- OS/2" by John Little et al. They also publish the best seller "Inside
- OS/2" and now "Inside OS/2 special edition".
-
- I found "Maximizing OS/2" to be the best book yet for general use of
- OS/2. It includes chapters on:
-
- Architectural Overview: gives details on the underpinnings.
-
- Migration Considerations: installing OS/2
-
- New Features: 32 bit graphics, MMPM/2
-
- New Workplace shell: basic how to use
-
- Optimizing OS/2 Installation: some advanced information including
- Networks.
-
- Understanding Startup Files: details of each line in config.sys
-
- Maximizing the Desktop: describes features
-
- DOS connection: considerable detail on DOS settings understanding MVDM
-
- Windows Support: great details on WIN-OS2, *.INI files
-
- Making Most of OS/2 Applications: describes a number of native OS/2
- applications.
-
- Networking OS/2: describes Netware use with OS/2
-
- Understanding the Communications Manager: E3EMUL.EX, ALMCOPY CMMouse
-
- Communications Manager: Advanced Features:
-
- Updating OS/2: details the ServicePak how to get and install
- it!
-
- OS/2 Troubleshooting: A great chapter about hardware under OS/2
- (e.g. CD-ROMS, SCSIs) evaluating system faults etc.
-
- The book includes a diskette containing WPSBK6, ICONS and several demos
- (basically stuff you can get from FTP).
-
- This would be a good book for someone without Internet access as it
- contains much of the information learned (the hard way) from reading
- USENET OS/2 groups. For example it gives IBM part numbers for the RED
- BOOKS, defines APARs CSDs etc, how to report problems or get help from
- IBM and talks about common installation problems and device drivers. It
- is really rich with tips and operational hints. Its obviously been
- written recently. However, they talk about version 2.1 being out by the
- end of 1992 and describe its major features (they didn't know that it
- will include enhanced mode windows!)
-
- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
