  14. I was hoping some Windows guru could helps me.

  16. I am having a lot of problems with my hard drive hanging
  17. in Windows 3.1. I am not sure if the problem is getting
  18. more frequent or not, but it's a big problem. The last
  19. few times I've used Windows, the hard drive would hang
  20. when I opened Windows. Here's the scoop:
  21.  
  22. 1. typed "WIN /3" or "WIN"
  23.  
  24. 2. Windows begins opening
  25.  
  26. 3. Get wallpaper up on screen
  27.  
  28. 4. Opening .WAV plays.
  29.  
  30. 5. Drive hangs. Mouse still moves, but is hourglass. The
  31.    LED that shows the drive is reading stays on constantly.
  32.    System doesn't recover. Cold boot necessary.
  33.  
  34. Last night I had to open Windows *5* times to get it to open
  35. successfully. Even then, an hour into working on a MIDI
  36. file, it froze again. Same thing - as 5 above.

  38. I thought perhaps SMARTDRV was the culprit, and after the
  39. 4th failure, I REM'd it from the autoexec.bat. Windows
  40. opened, but it hung up an hour later.
  41.  
  42. I'm running HIMEM, EMM386, and SMARTDRV. No parameters
  43. on the latter two.

  45. I have tried three different virus programs - one is brand
  46. new - and none show a virus. I don't think that's the cause.
  47.  
  48. Perhaps I need to reinstall Windows. Maybe my hard drive is
  49. going bad. Maybe I should reinstall the whole machine. I
  50. DON'T KNOW!

  52. Any clues, tips, pointers, incantations, rituals, etc. would
  53. be appreciated.
