- I think it is not only the aspi manager but also the cache memory on
- the controller that determines if the software cache is needed.
- Most scsi controllers come with some cache on board.
- My experience is overall the aspi manager improves greatly the
- disk performance. Software cache (SC) would definitely enhance
- performance if hardware cache (HC) is not available. But if one has
- sizable amount of hardware cache memory on the controller then
- smartdrv (or ncache or equivalent) is not needed because HC is faster
- than SC. However, installing both HC and SC together only slows
- down the system.
-
- For instance if a controller has only 512k on board, then a SC of
- 2048k will definitely be better. But on the other hand, if the
- controller has 2048k of its own, addition of SC is not necessary.
-
- ASPI is required in both cases. The /Q switch in the aspi driver
- (of DTC) makes the double buffering enabled.
