- : They will play through any sound device, including the speaker, provided
- : you have a driver for that device. Microsoft had some slight compatibility
- : problems with the PC speaker driver, so at the last minute they dropped
- : it from the Windows 3.1 release. Since then, however, they have
- : released it to the general public. I know it is at cica, probably
- : in the sound directory.
-
- I don't get the sounds through on my speaker, with the driver installed.
-
- : Don't expect too much, however. From what I've seen, everything *stops*
- : when sound plays through the PC speaker. If you have a short beep or
- : something it is not noticeable, but if you have something that plays
- : for a few seconds your system, including the mouse pointer, will freeze
- : until it is done playing. Needless to say, I don't think this "feature"
- : of the PC speaker will make it ideal for playing AVI files. If you
- : have a very fast PC, you might be able to hear something recognizable,
- : but it won't blow you away or anything.
-
- You can check the ""enable interrupts" box on the driver setup, which stops
- this happening. However, this leads to loss in sound quality (not that you
- get much quality through the PC speaker anyway). Doesn't help playing AVI
- files with sound.
