- There is this software scheme called "Rockwell Protocol" which implements
- some requirements of v.42bis in hardware (the bare minimum needed), but
- leaves much up to the software. These modems CANNOT run v.42bis (or probably
- MNP5) with most generic comm programs; they will run as a plain vanilla 2400 baud
- modem, however. The mode will come with a (usually horrible) program configured
- for that modem. Fortunately I think most of these modems are rapidly disappearing -
- it was an interim "solution" until the full hardware implementation became
- cheap enough.
-
- All configurations of Zoom modems are now available with full hardware implementation.
- I have a 2400/9600 FAx with v.42bis and MNP5 (external) and I'm quite happy
- with it. I use MTEZ and have no serious complaints, but I'm not a heavy telecomm
- user - I also use Procomm v.3.0 beta (used to be shareware!) and Kermit.
- They included WinFax 2.0, I believe this is also known as WinFax Lite.
- The successor program, WinFax Pro, is highly thought of by reviewers.
- I have no complaints - it works as advertised and has a clean interface.
- BTW, sending a FAX from MTEZ is also pretty easy. For my FAX needs these
- two are enough.
-
- When you buy your FAX modem, I recommend that you look for included WinFAX -
- unless you don't use Windows or are intent on buying FAX software. Zoom is
- nationally known and has been in business a long time - you will probably
- be happy with a Zoom modem. Apparently Twincom modems are the same hardware.
- A slightly scary thing about my Zoom documentation: NOWHERE in the ENTIRE
- manual did it mention the comapny name (Zoom), give an address or phone number,
- or even give the model number!!! However, the manual did read as though written
- by Americans, not Taiwanese.
