  14. Well, I'm sure you've all seen that the FAQ is out.  In addition to being
  15. available at sonygate.sony.com, both text and WinHelp versions of the
  16. FAQ are available from ftp.pitt.edu (130.49.254.3), in the directory
  17. ~users/i/n/infidel/win/FAQ.  Please see section e) below for more info 
  18. on my archive at ftp.pitt.edu, and please, mail me any suggestions you
  19. might have on how to better use it.

  21. Also, within a few months, I plan to offer this group as a mailing
  22. list as well.  Please let me know if you're interested.  Again, this
  23. is probably some time away, but I'd like to know if you are

  31.       The comp.os.ms-windows.announce group is for posting (not discussing) 
  32.    any announcements related to the Microsoft Windows Operating Environment
  33.    (or Operating System, depending on your particular taste.)

  36. b) What kind of things should I post here?

  38.      Well, since this is an .announce group, there will generally be no
  39.    discussion going on here.  However, don't be afraid to post if you 
  40.    hear of something that may be of interest.  See below for some
  41.    suggestions.  Please do not post questions to this group; they are
  42.    more suitable for one of the other groups.  If you do have a question
  43.    about something that you can't get answered anywhere else, you can 
  44.    mail me at one of the addresses below, and I'll do what I can. 
  45.      
  46.    Possible topics for this group include:
  47.  
  48.   - New commercial Windows Products available.
  49.  
  50.       I'll try to keep up on what's out there for the getting and how 
  51.     much you'll have to shell out to get it.  This will be probably
  52.     limited by volume, and perhaps this information will be archived and
  53.     kept so if, say, you're in the market for a Word Processor, you can
  54.     comparison shop.  We'll see how this goes.  Please note that if you
  55.     are a commercial vendor, I will accept product announcements, just
  56.     please try to make them more informative than just marketing hype.
  57.     It seems to be a general consensus of the moderators on the net that
  58.     this kind of stuff does not constitute "commercial use of the net",
  59.     so feel free to post.  I will ask (perhaps surprisingly) that a
  60.     price be included with any product announcements, as price could be
  61.     a useful factor to a prospective buyer.
  62.  
  63.   - New shareware/freeware available.
  64.  
  65.       If you hear of a new shareware/freeware product (and especially if
  66.     you are the author), please post an article including:
  67.  
  68.     - relevant ftp sites and directories
  69.     - brief description or evaluation of the product (try to be
  70.        objective and sensible about this, please!)
  71.     - registration fee, future plans, etc.
  72.  
  73.   - New drivers, etc.
  74.  
  75.       Yes, I'll actually try to keep track of where you can go to get
  76.     your SuperFoobar 16 zillion colors windows drivers, etc.  Actually,
  77.     most of these end up on ftp.cica.indiana.edu, in pub/pc/win3/drivers. 
  78.     If you can't find a particular driver there, perhaps your best
  79.     course of action is to post an article to one of the other groups
  80.     (perhaps comp.os.ms-windows.setup).  You can feel free to mail me if
  81.     you REALLY can't find something, but you'll probably find that I
  82.     have no special powers of acquisition for this type of stuff.
  83.       I would also like to thank Aaron Bregel for periodically making 
  84.     available the list of drivers available from the MS Support BBS at 
  85.     (206) 637-9009.  Chances are, if you see it there, you can get
  86.     it somewhere on the net.

  88.   - Windows conferences, meetings, exhibits.

  90.       I'll post whatever I hear about any Windows-related goings-on.

  96. c) I've never used a moderated group before. How does it work?

  98.      In most cases, you can just post as you normally would, and your
  99.    news program will take care of the rest (as long as it's >v2.11).  If
  100.    you have an older version of news, or if you post and get a
  101.    rejection notice or never see your article nor hear from me, you
  102.    will have to mail the articles to me directly at:

  106. d) Does this group have a FAQ?

  108.      Well, the other groups do.  The FAQ's are maintained by Tom Haapanen
  109.    (tomh@wes.on.ca), and are available periodically on this group. The
  110.    WinHelp versions are simultaneously posted to comp.binaries.ms-windows.
  111.    Also, both versions of the FAQ are available via ftp to ftp.pitt.edu
  112.    (130.49.254.3), in the directory ~users/i/n/infidel/win/FAQ.  The
  113.    WinHelp versions are also available at sonygate.sony.com (192.65.137.2),
  114.    under ~pub/comp.binaries.ms-windows/faq???01/.
  115.      If you don't have ftp access, mail me, and I'll be happy to mail
  116.    a copy back to you.

  118. e) What if I want a copy of an old article?

  120.      I am *finally* able to offer anonymous ftp access for old
  121. articles.  Ftp to ftp.pitt.edu (130.49.254.3), and cd into the 
  122. directory users/i/n/infidel/win.  Once you're there, you can
  123. grab the README file for more information.  The index is the directory
  124. itself, and, no, you don't have to type the full name of the article
  125. to get it- see the README for details.

  127. If you use AFS, you can access the articles with a cd to
  128. /afs/pitt.edu/usr1/infidel/public/win.
