- Since James (and please call me Chip, eh?) has been so kind as to post
- a friendly article in reply to a not-so-friendly article of mine, it's
- only right for me to respond in kind and in public.
-
- According to jjctc@lhdsy1.lahabra.chevron.com (James C. Tsiao):
- >I feel that it may be easier on users if smalltalk and other extras of
- >limited interest was placed in separate series.
- >
- >This is a difference in opinion. I don't believe we'll ever change the
- >other person's mind.
-
- When we get down to the technical issue, I agree that it _may_ be
- easier on users to split out `extras of limited interest'. But a
- problem with further splitting the b? and c? series is that SLS is
- useful to a very diverse user population. Defining `limited interest'
- is quite difficult -- to the point that, were I Peter, I would have
- little motive even to try. Imagine the disagreements about whose
- interests are limited and whose are general.
-
- >You thought I was complaining about Peter's policies. And, rightly so,
- >you flamed me for doing it. However, here is my POV: [...]
- >I "complained", not about Peter's policy, but rather the suggestion to
- >add the extra c disk from the other poster.
-
- Yes, my discomfiture was based on a misunderstanding.
-
- > condescend - to assume an air of superiority.
- > pompous - Self-important. Excessively elevated or ornate.
- >Not the same, perhaps, but pretty close.
-
- Granted.
-
- >Mr. Salzenberg, I extend an olive branch to you. I do not wish to continue a
- >flamewar that was precipitated by a misunderstanding. [...] So how about it?
-
- Great. And I apologize for directing personal criticism at you that
- you did not deserve. I'd have done well to remember the scripture:
- `Be swift about hearing, slow about speaking, slow about wrath.'
