- Okay, I have gotten about 10 responses to my query regarding whether people
- would recommend Coherent as an OS or not. I haven't kept strict numbers,
- although I can say for certain that 3 people gave negative responses,
- while the rest were positive (approx. 2 to 1 for). The biggest
- criticisms were against technical support and problems with the software
- (bad installs, and a harddrive performance, especially). Ironically,
- some of the biggest praise was for technical support! Also mentioned
- as pros were ease of installation (one person didn't even use the
- manual), stability, even relative to other OSs, Unix or otherwise,
- and documentation quality.
-
- As for myself, I had specific concerns, so I called Mark Williams, with
- the following questions, and MWC's responses:
- Q. Do you support HardCard II's?
- A. Yes.
-
- Q. Any problems with DTK BIOS?
- A. No.
-
- Q. Future Domain SCSI cards alright?
- A. Yes.
-
- Q. SyQuest reomxxx removable media okay?
- A. Yes, although you'll have to mount and dismount to change
- cartridges.
-
- Q. DOS and Coherent can coexist?
- A. Yes: they must have their own partitions, and how you boot up can
- be configured a number of ways.
-
- The above are not verbatim, but accurately reflect the information I
- was given over 2 calls to MWC.
-
- Information was not available on release dates for the next release
- (although I was told it would be this year.), nor pricing on the
- new release/upgrade.
-
- If anyone has any information to the contrary of any of this, please
- post it?
