  17. I've used a 688 and it is surprisingly good for a cassette format.  They
  18. managed to cram in 8 tracks with clean sound and virtually no crosstalk.
  19. The DBX noise reduction pumps a little with the usual instruments.  The
  20. mixer is a tad noisier than it should be.  I found myself doing mixdowns
  21. by running the 8 direct tape outputs to a quieter external mixer.

  23. I use SMPTE for sync (on track 8).  No need for a guard track on 7.
  24. I experimented with the built-in MIDI sync once.  It seemed to work
  25. as advertised.  You will need a sequencer that can slave to MIDI 
  26. clocks and respond to MIDI song pointer.

  28. My only strong warning concerns the complexity.  If this is your first
  29. experience with this kind of multi-track recording, expect to
  30. have a lot a patience.  It takes a while to get the hang of the
  31. operations of the 688.

  37. As a "porta-studio", the 688 is about the best you can do.  The next
  38. step from there would be an open reel 8-track (or ADAT) with an external
  39. mixer.  You'll probably want an effects unit too.  The cost can start
  40. adding up.
