SGI has some MIDI and Audio libraries which you could use to do what you want.
I'm not sure on the pricing, but a local sales rep should be able to tell you. As far as applications go, I don't know of many (or any actually) unix applications which will let you convert from MIDI into some sort of generic audio (of any kind).
