  16.     We worked with both ObjectWorks (ParcPlace) &
  17.  Smalltalk-V (Digitalk). Unfortunately they seem
  18.  to be the only major players. Their systems
  19.  (= the libraries) are not as compatible with each
  20.  other as you would like. More or less you have to
  21.  choose one and stick to it.  
  22.  
  23.  Main points in favor of each:
  24.  
  25.  Digitalk:
  26.   - Cheap
  27.  
  28.   - No run time license, so you can actually make
  29.     a product with little risk.
  30.  
  31.   - Less programming tools but you can (should)
  32.     by them from 3. party.
  33.  
  34.   - Less portability between Mac & PC but better
  35.     integration with each environment (eg: support 
  36.     for DLL:s & XCMDs).
  37.  
  38.   - GUI is exactly the native GUI of each environment
  39.  
  40.  
  41.  Parc Place (Objectworks for Smalltalk)
  42.  
  43.   - Expensive.
  44.   - Excellent programming environment.
  45.  
  46.   - Excellent binary portability 
  47.      (when using the SAME release).
  48.  
  49.   - Run time licences, but if you have big
  50.     internal user-base, tolerable. However,
  51.     if the system doesn't get into widespread use,
  52.     you lose money.
  53.  
  54.   - Objectworks is akin to Windows, to run 
  55.     applications you need to buy the 'substrate'.
  56.     Unfortunately there aren't many commercial
  57.     packages available to run on top of it, so
  58.     YOUR system has to justify the cost alone.
  59.  
  60.   - GUI does not quite conform to the native style 
  61.     used on each of the platforms.
