- I can give some general information. For more information, contact the
- Adobe Developers Association (+1-415-961-4111) for programmer-oriented
- documentation, or the makers and sellers of Adobe fax printers (i.e. NEC
- and Compaq) for product and pricing information.
-
- Adobe fax is essentially a fax board which plugs into a PostScript printer,
- and some extensions to the PostScript language to control the fax board.
- By adding some reasonably simple commands to a printable PostScript language
- file, you can have the fax printer send your job to any Group 3 fax
- machine, or to any Adobe fax printer. When sending to a Group 3 fax
- machine, the PostScript interpreter rasterises the job at fax resolution,
- eliminating the poor quality caused by scanning a paper original or by
- conversion from 300 dpi laser printer resolution to 200 dpi fax resolution.
-
- In addition, when one Adobe fax printer is sending to another, they can
- communicate with PostScript language data instead of Group 3 raster data.
- This means that the fax message can print in colour, at full device
- resolution (up to 800 dpi), and on large paper sizes. In addition,
- the PostScript language form of the job can be smaller than the raster form,
- so that the phone call is faster and cheaper.
-
- Since Adobe fax uses a fax modem in the printer, it is highly unlikely that
- your existing fax modem will be usable. Also, only printers which have
- been designed with Adobe fax in mind can be upgraded to support it.
- Currently, the NEC SilentWriter 95 and 97, and the Compaq PageMarq 15 and 20
- are the only announced printers with Adobe fax capability. NeXT
- workstations also use Display PostScript to rasterise faxes, but this is
- slightly different than Adobe fax as described above.
-
- Adobe has developed fax drivers for Macintoshes and PC's. These provide
- the PostScript language commands to enable fax printing from most
- applications. I believe these drivers are shipped with the NEC and Compaq
