- The 8th NY/SIGAPL-sponsored "Tool of Thought" professional development
- seminar was held this past Saturday (January 23) in the facilities of
- Cornell University Medical College/New York Hospital in Manhattan.
-
- Plenary sessions were addressed by J. Philip Benkard on the topic of
- "Changing Perspectives" and by Kenneth E. Iverson on "From Iverson
- Notation to J". There were additionally over a dozen workshops and
- tutorials. Most speakers and attendees were from the New York metro
- area, but others came from California, Texas, New England, Canada, and
- the United Kingdom. Academics, employees of large and small firms, and
- independent consultants were among the attendees. In all there were
- approximately 70 attendees.
-
- Spiral-bound proceedings are available (vii+141 pp.); I don't know the
- exact price yet, but it will not exceed $US 20 postpaid in North America.
- I will post the price and ordering address to the news group as soon as
- I know exactly what it is.
-
- Contents of the proceedings:
-
- Langlet "New Mathematics for the Computer"
- Alvord "When 0 is False and 1 is True"
- Waters "Population Study: Life Tables and Age Pyramids"
- Wood "Thoughts Rescued: an Historian's Use of APL"
- MacDonald "Computers in the Curriculum: Structural
- Geology and Tectonics"
- Conser "The Use of APL in Monitoring Marine Fish
- Populations"
- Lin "Teaching Operations Research with APL"
- Bowman "APL Makes Me Feel All GUI"
- Armstrong "Expanding Vocabularies"
- Jones "Inner-Product Scans for Spirals and Random Bits"
- Butterworth "Integrating Graphics to Your APL*PLUS
- Application"
- Lea "Object Oriented Design and APL"
- Lee "Object Oriented Programming and APL"
- Kent "Data Typing, Encapsulation, and Abstraction:
- an APL2 Technique"
- Lucas "APL -- Concepts and Tools"
-
- Additionally, software (TryAPL and APL2/PC) for Jones's and Kent's
- presentations was received, and will be made available both by diskette
- purchase (probably around $5, price not fixed) from NY/SIGAPL, and by
- ftp (most likeley at UWaterloo, once th details of transport are worked
- out).
-
- Somewhat to my surprise (and disappointment), there were no presentations
- on or using J, except for Ken's plenary address, but (very) preliminary
- preparations for ToT IX will be underway soon. As soon as we have
- a proposed date (or range of dates) and an address, I'll post it here.
-
- Finally, I think it safe to say that a good time was had by all, and
- NY/SIGAPL looks forward to the next ToT PDS.
