- Point your gopher at merlot.welch.jhu.edu (128.220.59.18) and look in the
- following directory:
-
- --> 17. Usenet News and FAQs/
-
- and you'll see:
-
- 1. About These Services.
- 2. All FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) Searches and Archives/
- 3. Read USENET News Groups/
- 4. Search messages to Usenet Newsgroups/
-
- SuraNet seems to be down a lot today so if you can't get through try again
- later. Sorry, way out of my control.
-
- Here's a clip from the "About These Services" file.
-
-
- This directory contains links to the USNET Newsgroups as well as
- searches which allow you to utilize the wealth of information that is
- available on these groups.
-
- Descriptions of the entries are as follows:
-
- 2. All FAQs (Frequently asked Questions) Searches and Archives/
-
- From this directory you may Search a few selected FAQs (frequently asked
- questions and their answers) or you may search all of the FAQs (hundreds
- of them) at once. The chances are that the answer to you question can be
- found by using these searches so search here before you post a question to
- a newsgroup.
-
- Note - if you search the
-
- Search Macintosh FAQ (Long) <?>
-
- category you can use booleans (and, not), wildcards (*), and phrase
- searches (" ").
-
- If you have a specific FAQ in mind you may go to the FAQs - Archives
- directory which contains the individual FAQs for hundreds and hundreds
- of News groups. The initial connection will be a little slow
- (so be patient :-) as gopher is downloading the links to over 400
- directories to your client. The FAQS themselves are kept in compressed (.Z)
- format so you will need to be able to uncompress them on your machine. The
- uncompress utility is standard on Unix systems and there are
- uncompress utilities for Macs and DOS, available as freeware or
- shareware, two of which you can find in the Utilities directory.
-
- maccompress-32.hqx - compress/uncompress for the Mac.
-
- comp430d.zip - compress/uncompress for DOS.
-
-
-
- 3. Read USENET News Groups/
-
- You can read Usenet News groups from here by selecting the
- USENET News directory. Once you have selected this directory
- you will be presented with the top level of Usenet hierarchy:
-
- 3. alt/
- 4. bionet/
- 5. bit/
- 6. biz/
- 7. clari/
- 8. comp/
- 9. control/
- 10. cscw-implementors/
- 11. ddn/
- 12. general/
- 13. gnu/
- 14. junk/
- 15. local/
- 16. mi/
- 17. misc/
- 18. msu/
- 19. news/
- 20. rec/
- 21. sci/
- 22. soc/
- 23. talk/
- 24. to/
- 25. unix-pc/
-
- pick a directory and continue along the tree, reading the
- newsgroups of your choice.
-
-
-
- 4. Search messages to Usenet Newsgroups/
-
- This directory contains Wais sources which allow you to
- search the archives of the meassages posted to various
- Newsgroups. The files indexed for searching vary somewhat
- from group to group - the Biosci.src searches all of the
- messages posted to all of the groups in the Biosci hierarchy,
- while the comp.sys.src only searches the past 10 days of
- postings. However a surprising number of these cover the
- all the messages ever posted to the group.
-
- The "Search Bionet and Info-GCG articles " and
- sun-managers-summary.src searches support the boolean operators
- 'and' and 'not', wildcards (*), and phrase searches (" ")
- (Kudos to Don Gilbert for the wais code modifications).
-
