  12. I am just beginning to explore the vast world of DEM data.
  13. I've already found out about DEM files, and where I can get them 
  14. (either directly from USGS, or on spectrum.xerox.com in /pub/map/dem),
  15. but still have other basic questions (FAQ?):

  17. What are the formats (in widespread use) for 3D data? DEM, any others?
  18. Where do I get documentation on these formats if I want to write my own
  19.   programs to process them?
  20. What utilities (commercial, public-domain, shareware, copyleft) are available
  21.   (for any type of hardware), if I choose not to write my own programs to
  22.   process these data files? I've found VistaPro for PC's, but it only reads
  23.   data in it's own proprietary DEM format.
