- M.Sc./Diploma in GIS at the University of Edinburgh
- ---------------------------------------------------
-
- The importance of the spatial dimension in large scale data analysis for
- problems of environmental monitoring, regional development and land use
- planning is now widely recognised. Such investigations require the building
- of sophisticated geographical information systems to interrelate data
- derived from censuses, surveys, maps in conventional and digital form and
- satellite imagery.
-
- The Department of Geography at Edinburgh University has been at the
- forefront of GIS-related research for more than 15 years. We have a large
- group of GIS researchers and the most significant dedicated GIS computing
- facility of any University in Europe. Our M.Sc. and Diploma courses in GIS
- were the first of their kind in the U.K. They remain the largest, with more
- than thirty-five M.Sc. students annually.
-
- The course is composed of a set of base and option courses which are
- structured to allow maximum flexibility. The base courses deal with GIS
- principles, including relational database methods and elements of spatial
- analysis. Supporting option courses cover areas such as GIS software and
- systems, software engineering, GIS algorithms, advanced computer
- cartography, remote sensing methods and the use of terrain models. Further
- options provide an opportunity to investigate a range of applications in the
- fields of public policy and decision-making, locational modelling, develop-
- ment planning and simulation-based studies.
-
- In all parts of the course considerable emphasis is placed on the
- acquisition of specialist skills. Therefore, substantial practical work, in
- the form of exercises and projects using the Department of Geography
- VAXcluster and a large number of linked workstations, complements the formal
- lecture content of individual options.
-
- The course work for the M.Sc. is taught between October and March; the
- remaining six months being devoted to an individual research project.
- A wide variety of research projects are possible. Recent topics have
- addressed theoretical issues such as parallel processing and object-oriented
- methods in GIS. In addition, a range of GIS applications have been
- considered, many projects involving co-operation with outside organisations
- in the public and private sectors.
-
- The shorter Diploma course runs from October to June. The course work is
- the same as that for the M.Sc., with an extended practical project taking
- up the final term.
-
- The M.Sc./Diploma is open to those with an honours degree or equivalent. We
- value experience, and are particularly willing to support applications from
- more mature individuals wishing to consolidate skills. Applicants from
- overseas are required to have a good working knowledge of the English
- language. The M.Sc. course is recognised by the Royal Institution of
- Chartered Surveyors as providing exemption from their professional examina-
- tions.
-
- The M.Sc. course is supported by awards from NERC, SERC and ESRC (priority
- rated) for the funding of U.K. students. The Diploma course is supported by
- the SOED for Scottish students and has been supported by the LEAs in England
- and Northern Ireland.
