  14. For counting/sizing pebbles in pictures of river beds I would
  15. suggest you look into morphological techniques. They have been
  16. used to solve a wide range of similar problems. One reference
  17. is Image analysis and mathematical morphology by J Serra.
  18. There was a special issue of Computer Vision Graphics and Image
  19. Processing some years back, Vol 35 page 279 onwards. 1986.
