- Not all martial arts were created equal. Aikido, which I have been
- forced to stop practicing, uses a lot of wrist grasps and
- twisting/bending motions. It also involves a lot of rolling around,
- which if not done properly can damage the shoulder and neck (wrist
- injury is probably possible as well). Martial arts that involve
- punching heavy bags or [padded?] opponents may also cause wrist
- damage.
-
- In addition to loss of income due to inability to work as a computer
- programmer, one of the biggest problems due to my RSI has been the
- loss of the ability to participate in many physical activities (e.g.,
- Aikido, biking, etc.) Swimming and hiking are some of the few
- physical activities which my body would allow (hiking damaged my
- knees, though). Finding fun activities that don't damage some part of
- one's anatomy can be a challenge. For instance, this winter I hope to
- learn scuba diving, which seems like an unlikely sport considering I
- live in cold New England.
