- Thanks for the many responses regarding my hand pains caused by
- EMACS.

- Here's a summary of the advice I was given [x = # of recommendations]:

- 1) Try VIP mode in EMACS. For GNU emacs, the command is M-x vi-mode, or
- M-x vip-mode. (found in the Miscellaeous Commands chapter) (4x)

- 2) Use the arrow keys. (I don't since it takes too long). (3x)

- 3) Use a palm rest. (3x)

- 4) "See if you can re-map the keys to ones that use less reach "
- and "stop using any key combinations that hurt your hands."
- Dvorak was recommended. (3x)

- 5) "learn to always use opposing hands when hitting ctrl and alt...
- (never hit ctrl and the key with the same hand)..."

- 6) Use a foot pedal for "ctrl, alt, shift, <cr>, <tab>, and <delete>"
- or some subset. (2x)

- 7) Buy a new keyboard. A list of such is given in the FAQ of
- sci.med.occupational (2x)

- 8) Take more frequent breaks, perhaps using a tool that enforces it.

- 9) "Try an not use the keyboard all day - you are at a 12 times
- greater risk if you use the keyboard for more than 5 hours per day"

- 10) Use a trackball in preference to a mouse.

- strive "to use the lightest touch possible"
