- A question for you all. I've seen a number of ads recently for
- things like "The Complete Communicator", which do modem and fax
- and voice mail, all in one. Well, here's my question.
-
- A friend of mine runs a small real estate firm here in Mass. She
- has a fax machine (you know, one of those old kinds you have to
- put on a table :>), a modem (on the same line as the fax), and a
- special outside service she pays to do voice mail. Faxing and
- modem use (the modem is a 2400) is not a real problem, but the
- voice mail, which she got recently for all her employees and
- cannot live without now, is a problem. The way it's set up now,
- when the last person leaves the office they turn on the forwarding
- to the voice mail company's number. (Their "tree mailbox".) When
- somebody calls, they get to push a button and leave someone a
- message. When the message is left, the service beeps her on her
- beeper, giving her the number of messages she has waiting on the
- display of the beeper. She can call in from anywhere and get them.
-
- The problems: 1. This service is EXTREMELY expensive; her expenses
- have gone way up since she started having to pay the voice mail
- carrier. 2. The block of exchanges owned by the carrier are in a
- different town, and are long distance to her; her local phone bill
- has gone up by $150 since she started having to forward calls to
- this place.
-
- Now, the question. Like I said, I've seen a number of these combo
- packages around. What I'm looking for is one that has a modem
- and fax and voice mail all in one. The voice mail is the most
- important feature. It has to take a large number of mailboxes,
- be very easy to activate/deactivate, have support for a beeper
- type setup (or even be able to perform an event when a call comes
- in -- I could whip up a program to do the actual calling), and
- provide remote maintenance (call in and get messages, change your
- outgoing message, etc.). It also has to be "competitively priced";
- I would set a limit of $500, because after a few months you've
- made that back, but she can't afford to shell out anything more.
- The card must also be for the IBM (8- or 16-bit card is OK, she's
- got a 386) and, if possible, should include Windows software to
- make things easier for her.
-
- Thanks for your help... Please either reply on this list or send
- info to me at the address below. Thanks a lot!
