  16. On the ZyXEL U-1496E (as on many external modems) there is a light called
  17. HS.  On modems generally it lights up if you are at your highest speed.
  18. On my ZyXEL U-1496E it lights up if I am at 9600, 14400, or 16800.

  20. Nothing about the light tells you which of those three is the case.

  22. I realize from your post that you cannot easily go into command mode 
  23. because of the application you are running.  Too bad.  As I'm sure
  24. you know, if only you could get a chance to see the "connect" message,
  25. you would be able to get the answer.
  26. Or if you could escape with +++ and then type ATO, you would again
  27. get the connect message with the answer.

  29. One of the ZyXELs has an LCD display.  Maybe it shows the data rate
  30. on the display?  Does anybody know?  The user manual I have 
  31. suggests that the U-1496 (with no letter at the end) is the one
  32. with the LCD, and that the display shows both the DCE data rate 
  33. and the phone-line data rate.
