  15. Consider an account executive who has an index of hourly sales summaries
  16. of the following form:

  18.     Region.spreadsheet.gross
  19.  
  20. These indexes are pointers to spreadsheets scattered, by implication,
  21. across the enterprise according to region.  The executive has no other
  22. information except to note that all spreadsheets are in desktop computers,
  23. which are connected via his virtual path network, and that physical
  24. links have cost associated with their usage.  In fact, the concept of
  25. region has not even been defined according to any criteria.

  27. No computers have been numbered, no object dictionaries, no servers,
  28. no network management packages.

  30.  The executive would first like to define region points, and then
  31. query the spreadsheets on an hour to hour basis such that his daily
  32. network costs are minimized.
