I assume you are running some Release 6 version of INGRES. Under Release 6,
this is a SERIOUS problem, because INGRES is built to do everything possible to
avoid inconsistent dbs, so this message should send off warning bells. The
main reason for getting an inconsistent database is that the integrity of your
logging system file has been compromised. INGRES uses the logging system file
to record information about all open transactions, so that it can recover those
transactions in the case of transaction failure, client failure, server failure,or system failure. If it cannot use the log file to recover transactions, it
will mark your db as inconsistent, and you will get that message upon connectionattempt.
>it's a very common problem, it happens like once a month,

You should make resolving this problem the highest priority at your site.
Depending on how you are fixing the problem, you may not actually have
consistent data. Resolving the problem could be easy or difficult, depending
on what the problem really is. The best place to start is to look in your
ingres files directory for the INGRES error log file. This is in
II_SYSTEM:[INGRES.FILES]ERRLOG.LOG on VMS and $II_SYSTEM/ingres/files/errlog.log
on UNIX. This file records errors that are encountered in the INGRES
installation.
Once you have looked here, if you still need assistance, the next step is to
contact INGRES Technical Support and explain the problem, including any
unusual entries in the error log file. They can then walk you through
finding and correcting the cause of the inconsistent db.
